How It Started:
The clients reached out while restoring one of the oldest log homes in Valemount. The home was on the smaller side, so they wanted a separate, more modern space they could get away to. A multipurpose spot that added room without touching the original character of the log home.
The catch was making it feel like it belonged. They didn't want a modern cabin that clashed with a historic log home sitting a few steps away. They wanted the new unit to pick up the same colors and finishing details as the home they were restoring, so the two read as one property rather than two separate builds.
That's where we spent most of our time up front. Dialing in an exterior that felt modern but tied right back into the log home. It took some back and forth, but we landed on a look that pulls it all together.
The Build:
They went with our 11.5′ × 27′ Modern Cabin, and inside it stayed close to standard. With two additions that made it their own: an extra window above the kitchenette island to pull in more light, and an electric fireplace in the living space for warmth and ambiance.
Because this is an accessory building and not a full dwelling, the kitchen is a kitchenette rather than a full kitchen. No range or range hood here. Just a fridge, a small sink, extra storage, and counter space. Simple and functional for how they'll actually use the space.
The bathroom is our standard layout: a 3′ corner shower, toilet, and vanity, with all the standard mechanical including on-demand hot water.
The real work went into the exterior. The clients chose white windows inside and out, red trim around the windows and doors, and barn board siding in two different profiles for texture. We carried the red trim up around the roofline and topped it with a galvalume metal roof. It's a departure from what we usually build, but that was the point. Every detail was chosen to match the log home already on the property, and it came together exactly the way they'd hoped.
The Installation:
The install was a little different on this one too, again because it's an accessory building. Instead of a full concrete or screw pile foundation, the clients went with concrete pads and blocking. A simpler, well-suited base for this kind of structure.
We also set this one without a crane. There was just enough room on the property to drive the cabin in and get it centered between the pads. From there we jacked it up and lowered it down onto the cribbing. It's always nice when a site allows for that. Clean, efficient, and no crane required.
The weather cooperated and the whole delivery went smoothly. With the cabin set, the clients will build out their skirting package around the base to finish it off.
Another Successful Delivery!
The clients are now getting ready to move in. They're wrapping up the final work on the original log home, and the plan is a patio connecting the two buildings to bring the whole property together. They're hoping to be settled in this fall, before winter. A modern getaway that fits right in alongside a piece of Valemount history.
